About
Who We Are
The Automatic Sprinkler Inspection Bureau (ASIB) is South Africa's established authority on fixed automatic fire protection systems. Founded in 1970 by thirty-five short-term insurance companies, ASIB was created on a single unifying principle: that while insurers may compete on premiums and ratings, the standard for fixed fire protection must be uniform, independent, and consistently applied.
That founding principle remains at the core of everything we do.
Our Mandate
ASIB operates as a regulatory body. Our fees are structured to cover operating costs, not to generate commercial returns. This independence allows us to fulfil our mandate without commercial bias.
Our core functions include:
- Maintaining and updating the Rules governing fixed fire protection systems in South Africa
- Listing and grading sprinkler installation companies against defined competency standards
- Technical support of system designs and installations
- Inspecting both new and existing installations
- Issuing Clearance Certificates to premises that meet the minimum requirements
What We Do
Our primary function is the inspection of fixed automatic sprinkler installations, assessed against internationally recognised rules, codes, and standards. Where a system meets the required standard, ASIB issues a Clearance Certificate - providing assurance to property owners, insurers, and authorities alike.
A comprehensive inspection report is issued following every inspection.
Beyond inspections, ASIB provides technical advisory and interpretive services to a wide range of stakeholders, including:
- Fire brigades
- Sprinkler installers and contractors
- Insurance companies and brokers
- Property developers and owners
- Architects and consulting engineers
Independent Inspection
Fixed fire protection systems protect lives and property. ASIB's inspection process is the primary mechanism by which the South African market can verify that an installed system genuinely meets the required design and installation standard - not just on paper, but in practice.
Our work protects the interests of building owners, occupants, insurers, and the public. It is not advisory in nature - it is a structured regulatory function backed by decades of technical expertise and institutional knowledge.
